Arenal's resort springs sit 8-16 minutes from La Fortuna, San Carlos is near Ciudad Quesada and Miravalles near Bagaces. At Tenorio the Río Celeste springs are for looking only, and the Orosi Valley is about an hour from San José. The cheapest guided day here is $61.54.

Every Hot Spring in Costa Rica

The directory runs region by region. Where a tour on this site reaches the spring, the last column links its card. Where none does, it says how you get in.

The Directory

Twenty-five springs, from riverbank pools to water parks and mud pots you may only look at. The water column is the one to read first: a river soak, a resort pool and a waterslide park are three different days. Drive times and venue facts come from the venues and the tour listings, and prices for springs no tour sells are left to the regional guides.

What the Water Is

The three regions deliver different water. Río Negro at Hacienda Guachipelín runs 10 riverbank pools heated naturally by the volcano, reached by a 350-meter forest walk and two suspension bridges, with volcanic mud applied as a spa-style mask before a river rinse. Rincón Thermals and Buena Vista Vandara are constructed thermal pools with mud and a steam sauna, part of a full park day.

Sensoria keeps three mineral pools reached on a guided 7 km walk. Hacienda Orosi in the east fills 7 pools with telluric, non-volcanic mineral water that springs at more than 65 degrees Celsius and arrives in the pools at 34-39°C. In most Guanacaste venues the mud bath and cold river rinse are part of the product, not an add-on.

Pick a Hot Spring by What You Want

Six common reasons to go, each with the spring and the listing that fits it.

A Natural River Soak

Best for: couples and anyone who wants moving water

Río Negro's ten pools sit on both banks of a river, reached over two suspension bridges, with a mud bath and a river rinse. The self-guided pass adds the Oropendola Waterfall and a buffet lunch for $76.

Río Negro day pass

Mud Bath and Hot Water

Best for: families and mixed abilities

The Rincón Thermals pass covers thermal pools, a mineral mud bath, a waterfall walk and lunch for $75, with parking and a locker. It is wheelchair accessible and strollers are allowed.

Rincón Thermals day pass

Best for: Tamarindo, Coco, Conchal and Liberia stays

The Guachipelín combo collects from the beach towns and Liberia at no extra cost, then runs a zipline, 5 km of river tubing and lunch before the Río Negro springs. The day is 8-12 hours for $145.

Guachipelín combo

Sensoria caps daily visitors and walks you about 7 km past two waterfalls to three mineral pools, with a chef-designed lunch, for $190. The minimum age is 5.

Sensoria thermals walk

Irazú and Orosi tour

Resort Pools and Slides

Best for: children who want waterslides

Around La Fortuna, Baldi, Los Lagos and Kalambu pair warm pools with slides, 8-9 minutes from town. The Arenal section lists them with the tours that end at a resort.

Costa Rica Hot Springs Tours Compared

The prices below are "from" figures: the lowest adult rate on each listing, per person, before extras. Read the fine print before you book. Pickup from Tamarindo, Conchal, Flamingo, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and Liberia is in the price on the two Native's Way tours. The gated Papagayo resorts (Andaz, Four Seasons, Planet Hollywood) and the Waldorf Astoria pay a $70 transport fee per booking, and Hacienda Pinilla / JW Marriott $50 per booking, billed separately. The Orosi day trip adds a $19 Irazú Volcano National Park government fee billed separately from the listed price. Every listing on this page is sold through a booking platform that handles payment and offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

Guachipelin Volcano Combo: Zipline, River Tubing & Hot Springs

Rincón de la Vieja: River Pools and Volcanic Mud

The Guanacaste cluster sits on the slopes of Rincón de la Vieja, about 30-48 minutes from Liberia, and pairs hot water with volcanic mud almost everywhere. These are the five venues the bookable tours sell.

A steaming hot spring pool in Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the volcano behind Costa Rica hot springs tours in Guanacaste

Río Negro Hot Springs at Hacienda Guachipelín

Río Negro is the natural-river option: 10 pools built on the riverbank, water heated by the volcano, reached through dry forest on a 350-meter path with two suspension bridges. The ritual here is mud first, a spa-style volcanic mud coating, then a rinse in the river, then back to the thermal pools. Changing rooms, restrooms and lockers sit at the entrance. The listing sells it two ways: inside the Guachipelin Volcano Combo at $145 as the calm finish after ziplining and 5 km of river tubing, or on the self-guided Rio Negro day pass at $76, which adds the Oropendola Waterfall, a 25-meter drop into a turquoise pool, and a buffet lunch at Rancho Don Elias. The three sites sit several kilometers apart, so the $76 pass needs your own car between stops.

The venue has its own page: Río Negro Hot Springs.

Rincón Thermals Nature Day Pass

The Rincón Thermals Nature Day Pass is the lowest price here for a full thermal day: $75 for a 5-hour visit with hot springs, a mineral mud bath, a river walk, a waterfall, a suspension bridge, cultural and orchard trails, a garden-to-table lunch, free parking and a locker. It skips the canopy, horseback and slide activities of the neighboring adventure parks. It is self-drive: guests register at the welcome center near Liberia, where a certified guide is assigned.

All fitness levels are welcome, the site is wheelchair accessible, and strollers are allowed, which makes it one of the few springs products here that works for toddlers as well as grandparents.

Buena Vista Vandara Adventure Combo

The Buena Vista Vandara combo from Tamarindo runs 8 hours and costs $206, with canopy zipline, water slide, hot springs, mud bath spa and horseback ride all in one ticket plus buffet lunch and hotel pickup from selected Tamarindo-area hotels. Check the weight limits before booking: 290 lbs for ziplining and 270 lbs for horseback, stricter than most similar combos. A minimum of 2 people per booking applies.

The hot springs come near the end of the day, after the zipline and the horses, so this is an adventure day with a soak rather than a spa day. The operator is Pininos Adventures, and the listing puts the whole day at 8 hours including the drive.

Canyon de la Vieja Lodge

The private La Leona Waterfall tour ends at Cañón de la Vieja Lodge at the foot of the volcano, with natural hot springs, volcanic steam and a traditional mud bath as the final stop. Before that it fits lazy river tubing and cliff jumping at Poza Los Coyotes, a hike to La Leona Waterfall and a casado lunch in Curubandé into about 6 hours. It costs $234, more than the shared combos because transport is private, and the drive from Guanacaste beach hotels takes about 90 minutes.

It is the top-rated listing on this site at 5.0 from 46 reviews.

Sensoria Land of Senses

Sensoria is the quiet, capped end of the market. The Healing Thermals tour costs $190, runs up to 6 hours, and walks about 4.2 miles (7 km) at medium level to two waterfalls, Buenos Aires and Aguilar, and three named mineral pools: Jícara, Danta and Pilón. A welcome cocktail, a chef-designed lunch at La Casona, walking sticks and a bilingual guide are included. The reserve limits daily attendance, so groups stay small, and the minimum age is 5. Access is by booked guided tour only, there is no walk-up day pass.

For the whole volcano in one place, see the Rincón de la Vieja hot springs guide.

Hot Springs Tours From Tamarindo, Playas del Coco and Liberia

Yes, there are hot springs trips from Tamarindo: the springs are not at the beach, they are 90 minutes or so inland at the foot of Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles, and the tours below move you there and back in a day.

Pickup Areas, Times and the Shape of the Day

The Native's Way pickups start early. The Guachipelin combo collects at Hacienda Pinilla and JW Marriott at 6:00 am, Tamarindo and Langosta at 6:30 am, Grande, Flamingo and Potrero at 6:30 am, Conchal at 6:45 am, the RIU hotels at 6:45 am, Playas del Coco at 7:20 am, Playa Hermosa and the Papagayo hotels at 7:30 am and the Liberia Peri Supermarket at 8:30 am. The volcano hike combo runs the same map. The operator sends the exact pickup time the day before. The Buena Vista Vandara combo and the La Leona private tour use selected-hotel or private pickup instead.

So what does the whole day look like? The Guachipelin combo runs 8-12 hours door to door: a morning drive north, an 8-cable zipline course, 5 km of river tubing, a buffet lunch, and the Río Negro springs and mud bath last, before the drive back. The hike combo runs 12 hours including transport, with a 2-hour volcano hike, the Oropendola Waterfall swim, lunch and the springs to finish. The soak is one slice of a long day, and the road fills much of it. That is the trade for staying on the coast.

For the full beach-side picture, see the Guanacaste hot springs guide.

Miravalles and Blue River: The Quieter Side

Miravalles is Guanacaste's second hot springs volcano, and Blue River sits inland in the same volcanic range. From the coast, both are full-day trips of 7-9 hours.

The Miravalles Day Trip

The Miravalles Volcano day trip costs $190, runs 7-9 hours, and combines a walkable live crater with a rainforest waterfall swim and a thermal springs stop, lunch and a bottle of water included. One honest gap: the listing does not name the springs venue, so you cannot check the specific pools before booking. Meeting points are the operator's Playas del Coco office, Plaza Santa Rosa in Liberia in front of Sucre Pharmacy, or El Jardin in Nacascolo, and a child car seat costs $20 extra if needed.

Wheelchair access exists at the thermal springs only.

Blue River Resort and Hot Springs

The Blue River full-day tour at $175 is an 8-hour loop from Tamarindo, Pinilla or Conchal hotels. You arrive around 10:00, hike trails along the blue-water Río Pénjamo past 4 waterfalls, tour a botanical garden with about 700 plant varieties and a butterfly park with nearly 15 species, eat an à la carte lunch, then soak in the resort's 4 green mineral hot spring pools and 1 freshwater pool before departing around 4:00 pm and reaching your hotel at about 6:30 pm. Pickup covers those three areas only, so travelers based elsewhere in Guanacaste should confirm before booking.

The Unsold Budget Venues

Several Miravalles-area venues are not sold through any tour on this site, so the figures below are the ones travel writers report, not official rates. Yökö and Thermomania are the budget pools. Las Hornillas is a family-run lodge on the volcano's active mud pots with a walkable pailas area, and Río Perdido is a hotel built around a thermal river canyon with no current day-pass figure.

Reviews of Thermomania frequently flag maintenance, so read recent ones first. The venue-by-venue detail is in the Miravalles hot springs guide and the Blue River guide.

Arenal and La Fortuna: The Resort Springs

Arenal holds the country's best-known hot springs, most of them resorts on Route 142 between La Fortuna and the volcano. From San José it is a different product: about 130-160 km and 2.5-3 hours each way.

The La Fortuna Resorts

The resorts sit 8-16 minutes' drive west of town, most on Route 142. Tabacón is the one with a true thermal river alongside its pools. Baldi, Los Lagos and Kalambu lean toward waterslides and families.

EcoTermales and Paradise are the quieter pools, and The Springs spreads its pools over two sections. The free El Choyín river near Tabacón costs nothing, but has no staff and no lockers, so go in daylight and leave nothing in the car.

Three Tours Around Arenal

From San José, the Arenal Volcano and Thermal Hot Springs day trip runs 13 hours: it stops in the artisan town of Sarchí, crosses pineapple, mango and banana country, eats lunch with a view of the 1,633-meter volcano, soaks in thermal pools connected by waterfalls and water slides, eats dinner, and drives back. A San José day trip to Arenal is mostly road. From La Fortuna itself, the full day tour packs La Fortuna Waterfall, a butterfly garden, a Maleku village visit and a hot spring resort finish into 11 hours for $92.40, with the resort not named in the listing and the meeting point at the Red Lava office opposite Relax Termalitas Hot Springs.

The morning hike tour is the shortest and cheapest at $61.54 and 6 hours, ending at a natural hot springs river rather than a resort pool, and you bring your own towel and water.

TourWhole dayStarts fromLunchPrice
Arenal from San José13 hoursSan José hotels, via SarchíYes, plus dinner$205
La Fortuna Full Day11 hoursRed Lava office, central La FortunaYes$92.40

Is the San José Day Trip Worth It

The numbers decide this one. The San José listing is 13 hours for $205 and holds the lowest rating on this site at 4.3 from 245 reviews, while the La Fortuna-based day tours rate 4.8 from 2,589 and 4.8 from 292 reviews. If Arenal springs are a priority, sleeping one or two nights in La Fortuna turns a 13-hour round trip into a short drive and frees up your evenings.

If the capital is your only base and you accept the road time, the day trip works, and the Sarchí stop breaks up the drive.

Hot Springs Near San José: The Orosi Valley

Yes, there are hot springs near San José, and the closest cluster is the Orosi Valley in Cartago province, about 35-40 km and roughly an hour southeast on paved roads, no 4x4 needed.

The Irazú and Hacienda Orosi Day Trip

The Irazú Volcano and Hacienda Orosi tour is the bookable way to do it: $198, 5-7 hours, San José hotel pickup with a stop at Irazú's main craters and Cartago's Basilica of the Virgin of the Angels before the soak. Hacienda Orosi's springs are telluric, non-volcanic mineral water filtered between layers of the earth, surfacing at more than 65 degrees Celsius. Budget for the extra: a $19 government service fee for Irazú Volcano National Park is billed separately from the listed price.

Age bands run infant 0-3, child 4-10, adult 11-90.

Hacienda Orosi and the Budget Alternative

Hacienda Orosi keeps 7 thermal mineral pools holding 34-39°C, an animal farm and a 5 km coffee-tour hike through the Orosi mountains, and sells entry through its own booking system without a price on the page, so the tour is the way to book it here. The budget end of the valley is Balneario Los Patios, a simple public balneario with a semi-Olympic pool, two medium pools at 30°C and a children's pool, open 8:00 am to 4:00 pm daily. A small public thermal pool, the Balneario Termal, is also reported next to the Orosi Lodge. The table gives the figures travel writers report, so re-check at the gate.

Both venues are compared in the Orosi hot springs guide, with more options in hot springs near San José.

Safety, Swimwear and When to Go

Costa Rican hot springs are low-risk if you respect wet rock, geothermal ground and the sun. Each risk below comes with its fix, drawn from the venues' own guidance.

Slippery Rocks, Mud and Heat

Natural-river and mud-bath venues such as Río Negro, Sensoria and the mud-pot walking areas at Las Hornillas put wet volcanic rock and mud underfoot, so pack water shoes or secure sandals. Guanacaste's springs sit in a hotter, sunnier, more exposed climate than the Arenal side, so sun protection and hydration between pools matter more there. The fix is routine: sunscreen, a refillable bottle (the Native's Way tours ask you to bring one) and a hat, most of all in the December to April dry season.

Fumarole Boundaries and Geothermal Ground

Several Rincón de la Vieja and Miravalles sites, including Las Hornillas and Termales Miravalles, sit near active fumaroles and bubbling mud pots. Posted trail boundaries at these geothermal walking areas exist for a reason and should not be crossed. Stay on marked paths, keep children close, and let the certified guides who are assigned at venues like Rincón Thermals do the leading.

Mud baths are part of the product at Río Negro and the Rincón parks, and the routine is the same at each: coat, let it dry in the sun, rinse in the river, then back into the warm water.

Swimwear and Rainy Season

Costa Rica's commercial hot springs, around Arenal, Guanacaste and Orosi alike, are swimsuit-required facilities. Nudity is not customary or permitted at any venue covered here, and dressing rooms and lockers are provided for changing. The rainy season runs May through November nationally with the heaviest rain typically June to October.

The Native's Way tours state that they run rain or shine. Guanacaste's dry season, roughly December to April, is more pronounced than around Arenal, which stays greener and wetter.

Are Hot Springs Tours in Costa Rica Worth It

Weighing the tours against driving yourself and just buying a day pass.

What we genuinely like

  • A tour solves transport: Rincón de la Vieja is 30-48 minutes from Liberia and about 90 minutes from the beach hotels, and pickups start at 6:00 am so the whole day fits.
  • Lunch is included on every listing here, from buffet at Rancho Don Elias to a chef-designed meal at Sensoria's La Casona.
  • The mud bath and river rinse at the Rincón de la Vieja venues are part of the ticket, not an upsell.
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead on every listing, so a rainy day does not cost you the fare.
  • Entry fees and park fees are in the price on most listings, with the $19 Irazú fee the notable exception.

The honest downsides

  • The soak is one slice of the day: the Guachipelin combo stretches 8-12 hours and the San José Arenal trip runs 13 hours, mostly road.
  • The headline price is not always the day's price: the Irazú park fee ($19) is billed separately, and the gated Papagayo resorts pay $70 per booking for pickup.
  • Some listings do not name the springs venue at all, so you book the itinerary, not the pools.

Who it's NOT for: If you have a rental car and a free afternoon, a self-drive day pass such as the $75 Rincón Thermals pass gets you into the water for less and on your own clock.

Which Tour Fits Your Trip

If you are staying on a Guanacaste beach with no car and want one big adventure day

Book the Guachipelin Volcano Combo at $145 and check your hotel against the pickup list: most beach towns are included.

If you want the cheapest full thermal day and have a rental car near Liberia

Take the Rincón Thermals Nature Day Pass: $75 covers springs, mud bath, waterfall, lunch, parking and a locker.

If you want a quiet, small-group soak rather than a resort

The Sensoria Healing Thermals caps daily attendance and walks you to three named mineral pools for $190.

If you are based in La Fortuna and want the best value full day

The La Fortuna Waterfall and Hot Springs tour fits waterfall, volcano views and a resort soak into 11 hours for $92.40.

If San José is your base and you want springs without a 13-hour drive

Head east to the Orosi Valley hot springs or book the Irazú and Hacienda Orosi day trip, about an hour away.

Costa Rica Hot Springs: Common Questions

What are the best hot springs in Costa Rica?

It depends on the water you want. For a natural river soak, Río Negro at Rincón de la Vieja and Tabacón's thermal river near La Fortuna. For slides, Baldi and Los Lagos. For a quiet walk to wild pools, Sensoria. Near San José, Hacienda Orosi. Every one is pinned on the hot springs map.

Are there hot springs at Río Celeste?

Yes, but not for bathing. Hot springs and fumaroles sit along the Río Celeste trail in Tenorio Volcano National Park, and bathing inside the park is prohibited. The swim spots outside the park, like the free public pool past the entrance, are cool river water, not thermal. For a soak, Rincón de la Vieja is the nearest cluster: see the hot springs map.

What are the cheapest hot springs in Costa Rica?

The free El Choyín river near Tabacón costs nothing but has no staff. Walk-up pools like Balneario Los Patios in Orosi are reported at ₡4,000. The cheapest guided day here is the Arenal hike and hot river tour at $61.54.

Are there any natural hot springs in Costa Rica?

Yes. Río Negro at Hacienda Guachipelín runs 10 riverbank pools heated by Rincón de la Vieja, Sensoria keeps natural mineral pools reached on a 7 km forest walk, and the Arenal morning hike ends at a natural hot springs river near La Fortuna. See the natural venues in the Rincón de la Vieja hot springs guide.

Is it safe to swim in hot springs in Costa Rica?

Yes, with care on wet volcanic rock and mud underfoot at river venues, and posted boundaries at fumarole and mud-pot areas like Las Hornillas should never be crossed. Pack water shoes and read the Guanacaste hot springs guide before a beach-based trip.

Do you wear a swimsuit in Costa Rica's hot springs?

Yes, swimsuits are required at all commercial venues covered here and nudity is not permitted, with dressing rooms and lockers provided. The self-guided Rio Negro day pass includes towel service at the springs, though you bring your own for the waterfall stop.

Are there hot springs near Tamarindo?

Not in Tamarindo itself, but tours pick up there from 6:30 am and reach Rincón de la Vieja or Miravalles springs the same day, roughly 90 minutes each way. Compare the beach pickups in the Guanacaste hot springs guide.

Are there hot springs near San José?

Yes, the Orosi Valley is about 35-40 km and roughly an hour away on paved roads, with Hacienda Orosi's 7 pools at 34-39°C. The full rundown is in hot springs near San José.

Which Costa Rica hot springs tour is best for families?

The Rincón Thermals Nature Day Pass accepts all fitness levels, is wheelchair accessible and allows strollers, with a child band for ages 5-10 and a 5-hour format that suits young families. Families without a car can weigh the Miravalles day trip, which supplies child car seats at $20 each.

Check live dates for the $75 Rincón Thermals Nature Day Pass, the lowest price here for a full thermal day with mud bath and lunch.
